Over the counter v's practitioner ONLY

When is comes to supplements, what you pay for is what you get. Did you know not all products are made equal? If you have purchased a product in the past and saw next to no results it may be due many factors including how much, how often, how long for and when to stop. These factors all come into play when correcting a deficiency and knowing a clients full history and other particulars helps us tailor the prescription to the individual to ensure a therapeutic result. The prescription can differ from person to person and its not the same for everyone so it’s important to speak to your skin therapist of health care provider on what would be appropriate to your specific case.

Wrong dose: As naturopaths/therapists we are qualified to be able to take into consideration your case presentation and influencing factors and prescribe a dose that not only will be a therapeutic dose, but will also be bioavailable meaning the formulation will be more available for your body to absorb. This means that the dose will depend on what is going on for you. Did you know that over the counter supplemental doses are usually too low to cause a therapeutic change? This is because supplements need to be safe for the general public to self prescribe and purchase on their own accord with little to no guidance. The products need to cause no harm to the customer no matter what their health condition is, no matter their age and no matter the other supplements/medications they are on.

Poor quality: A great example of what you get it what you pay for is fish oil. Did you know there are many variables that make up a good quality fish oil supplement? What levels are the actives (EPA & DHA) are in your fish oils? Have they been tested for mercury? Have they been processed with peroxide and damaged the oils? As a therapist we really want to help our clients avoid wasting their money on products that aren’t quite suitable for them.

Wrong supplement: At SJM, we use the best quality Zinc ACE & fish oils with good levels well-absorbed nutrients and deciding this and which one to use can be complex. It is important to use to educate our client with information that can arm them in making the best decision especially when trying to make changes within the skin.

Our fish oils are naturopath formulated at a high concentration to ensure you reach a therapeutic dose to help nourish the restoration of your skin barrier. Did you know that essential fatty acids are essential because we do not make them internally? They must be externally sourced through diet, skin care & supplementation. They are the backbone of skin health especially when treating an impaired skin barrier typically seen in acne and eczema cases. We love essential fatty acid supplementation here at SJM Skin Aesthetics. For more information about supplements or products high in essential fatty acids feel free to call & chat to our friendly staff Ashleigh & Kumi. We are happy to help!
